New Year’s resolutions? Resolve to set real goals instead!

As 2015 faded into memory many of us raised a glass and sang Auld Lang Syne, even if we don’t know what the words mean.

Then a new year began. Have you made your resolutions for the new year? Hopefully you haven’t. Here’s a better idea.

First, review your goals, both personal and professional, from 2015. How did you do? If you’re like most people you will find you accomplished some, are still working on others, and there are one or two that you just didn’t get to.

Next, think about what you want to accomplish in 2016 and write new goals.

Then, go back to the goals you didn’t get to last year and decide if they are still important. Were they overcome by events? Sometimes what was important 6 months or a year ago isn’t as important now. Or perhaps you had other priorities emerge, but you still think those goals are important.

Now, combine the goals from last year that you want to continue striving for and add in the new goals for the coming year.

Here’s the important part. Make sure you give yourself a completion date for each goal. Put that on your calendar along with a time every month when you’re going to review your goal progress. Isn’t that better than a couple of resolutions that you’re going to forget by March?

Have you ever wondered why gyms sell annual memberships? Probably because it’s estimated that only 8% of those who make New Year’s resolutions actually achieve them. However, when you set specific goals and track your progress, you’re much more likely to be successful.

From all of us here at The Daedalus Group (formerly Academy Leaders) we’d like to say “Thanks!” to our clients, workshop participants, and loyal readers for a great 2015! May you have great success and prosperity in the coming year.

By the way, Auld Lang Syne is translated as “times gone by.”

Happy New Year!
